Preface

Preface to the Book

The science of Ergophthalmology cuts across all of Ophthalmology, particularly its diverse subspecialties.

Our visual function plays an unavoidable role in our daily activities and it is, therefore, important to achieve a critical understanding of how vision works.

Recent and significant changes in modern employment, notably the perhaps exaggerated role played by information technology, increases the need for the use of the eyes.

It is up to the ophthalmologist to understand the scientific foundations of Ergophthalmology and its varied dimensions to better advise not only those that require his or her services but also to better promote this science to the general public.

It is our duty to advise and our obligation to disseminate.

Dr. Fernando Trancoso Vaz is the coordinator of the Portuguese Ergophthalmology Group (2017-2018), which has always shown a strong dynamism in its activities.

He has recently proposed the publication of the book Questions and Answers in Ergophthalmology, which will address aspects of this subspecialty.

The topics discussed range from how to correctly use electronic devices, vision in flight and underwater activities, optimal driving conditions and critical features in the operating room.

I think this handbook will prove very useful to all our colleagues, and an important aid in our daily clinical practice.

Preface to the digital edition

Originally written in Portuguese, this Ergophthalmology book was very well received in Portugal and internationally. The extraordinary success of the first edition led the Portuguese Ophthalmology Society to publish this digital English version that will give non-Portuguese speaking Ophthalmologists access to its contents.

We would like to thank the coordinator of the Portuguese Ergophthalmology Group Dr. Fernando Trancoso Vaz and all the working group for the efforts to bring this important subject to the forefront of our practice and to also thank Thea Laboratory for continuing to support these innovative initiatives.
